Metro line 1 in Budapest

16/08/2025

Budapest's first metro line is interesting not only because it is very old and does not resemble modern metro lines. Some information about it:

🔸 1. The first metro on the continent! It is actually the second metro in Europe after the London Underground, but the first on the mainland:)

🔸 2. It was an important year for the Hungarians, as it was the 1000th anniversary of the founding of the state.

🔸 3. The metro line is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as are other parts of Budapest, such as the Royal Castle.

🔸 4. The metro line actually ended on the surface, the tunnel originally ended at the Mexiói út station and the track pair ended on the surface.

🔸 5. Historic stops: several stops have been preserved in their original form, such as Vörösmarty Street.

🔸 6. Yellow trains: the iconic short and low trains are only running on this metro line. The rest of Budapest's metro lines are modern and deeper.
