Fake: Dracula's castle is in Budapest
There is a small castle in Budapest called "Vajdahunyad Castle," which many tourists believe to be Dracula's castle.
This is not true, but it does have some connection to Dracula.
1. The castle in Budapest is only a replica of the real Vajdahunyad Castle, which is located in Transylvania. (Transylvania was once Hungarian territory, but was annexed by Romania after World War I.)
2. The real Vajdahunyad Castle was built in the Gothic style, like many other castles in Transylvania in the Middle Ages.
3. The "real Count Dracula" was born in Transylvania, but not in Vajdahunyad, but in Bran Castle.
4. Dracula's castle is depicted in a similar Gothic style in films, which is why tourists think that the (new) Vajdahunyad Castle in Budapest is Dracula's castle.
By the way: you can see gothic style castel in Harry Potter films or Disney-logo:)
5. The castle has a small statue (for the benefit of tourists) by sculptor Kolodko. There is also a statue of Béla Lugosi, who played Dracula in the first Dracula film. (see my video)
So if you're visiting Budapest, remember that what you're seeing is not Dracula's castle—but we can tell you lots of other interesting facts about this attraction!
- Who was János Hunyadi, the owner of the original Vajdahunyad Castle?
- Why does the castle feature both Romanesque and Baroque styles?
- Why are there only 10 apostles standing next to Jesus on the facade of the chapel?
Our tour guides will be happy to tell you all about it! :)
