28/10/2026

You've probably come across his name in Budapest, but do you know who he was??

György Dózsa was a famous figure in Hungarian history, born around 1470. In 1514, he led a peasant revolt against the nobility after peasants recruited for a crusade rose up in rebellion. During the uprising, the peasants demanded better living conditions and greater freedom. The revolt was crushed, and György Dózsa was captured and executed.

His legacy lives on in Hungarian history, and many streets, schools, and squares bear his name. For example, Dózsa György Road, which leads to Heroes' Square, and the bus parking area near Buda Castle.
