The picturesque lake in Budapest's City Park, Városliget, has been part of the city's recreational life for almost two centuries. Originally, the area was a marshland, but in the first half of the 19th century it was transformed into a proper lake. By the 1830s, people were already enjoying boat rides on the water, while in winter the frozen lake became a popular place for ice skating.

The lake has always been a place for leisure and entertainment. In 1839, for example, a spectacular fishing competition was organised here, attracting thousands of spectators. Later, in 1869, the Pest Skating Association was founded, and the lake became the birthplace of the tradition that eventually led to today's City Park Ice Rink.

Today, the lake is once again a favourite spot for relaxing, walking and boating. In winter, the area around the lake is transformed into one of Budapest's most atmospheric skating locations.

So, although it may look like a peaceful modern park lake, it actually has a long history as one of Budapest's favourite places for recreation and entertainment.
