Museum of Ethnography, Budapest

One of the most striking features of Budapest's Museum of Ethnography is the metal grid covering its facade. The pattern consists of almost half a million tiny "pixels" incorporated into a laser-cut aluminium grid structure. 

The motifs were inspired by objects from the museum's Hungarian and international ethnographic collections. They include contemporary interpretations of folk-art patterns from Hungary and various cultures around the world. In total, 20 Hungarian and 20 international motifs can be discovered on the building. 

From a distance, the small geometric elements form large, flowing decorative patterns, while up close they look like a fascinating network of tiny metal shapes. The metal grid is not only decorative – it also provides shade for the glass walls and contributes to the building's energy efficiency.
