Hungarian Street Food You Should Try
Hungarian Street Food You Should Try
If you want to discover authentic Hungarian streetfood, there are several classics you should definitely try while visiting Budapest.
1. Lángos
Lángos is probably the most famous Hungarian streetfood. It is made from a simple yeast-based dough, which is stretched into a flat, round shape and deep-fried until golden and crispy on the outside, while remaining soft inside.
The traditional version is topped with garlic, sour cream and grated cheese. You can also find versions with ham, bacon, sausage, onion or other toppings. For the most authentic experience, try the classic garlic–sour cream–cheese combination.
2. Kürtőskalács – Chimney Cake
Kürtőskalács is one of the most recognizable Hungarian sweets. Strips of sweet yeast dough are wrapped around a cylindrical spit, coated with sugar and baked over heat. The sugar caramelizes, creating a crispy, golden exterior.
Popular versions are coated with cinnamon, walnuts, coconut, cocoa or vanilla sugar. It is best eaten fresh and warm.
3. Kolbász – Hungarian Sausage
Hungarian sausages are another great option for a quick bite. Depending on the type, they can be smoked, spicy or mildly seasoned. They are often served with mustard, fresh bread, pickles or onions.
4. Töltött Lángos
For an even heartier version of the classic lángos, try a stuffed one. The dough can be filled with cheese, ham, sausage or other savory ingredients before being fried.
5. Kürtőskalács Ice Cream
A modern Budapest favorite combines traditional kürtőskalács with soft-serve ice cream. The warm, crispy chimney cake is used as the cone and filled with ice cream and various toppings.
Whether you are looking for something savory or sweet, Hungarian streetfood offers plenty of traditional flavors to explore. And if you are visiting Budapest, trying at least one lángos and one kürtőskalács is almost a must!
