Budapest in the fall

07/09/2026

Budapest is a wonderful destination in autumn, when the summer heat fades and the city becomes quieter and more atmospheric.

September is often still warm and sunny, with pleasant temperatures for walking, sightseeing and sitting on outdoor terraces. In October, the weather becomes cooler and the parks and Buda Hills are covered in beautiful autumn colours.

By November, the days are colder and shorter, so it is a good idea to bring warm and waterproof clothing. One of the best autumn experiences is visiting one of Budapest's famous thermal baths, such as Széchenyi, especially when the air is cool and the water is warm.

A walk along the Danube is also beautiful in autumn, particularly around sunset when the Parliament and the bridges are beautifully illuminated. You should also explore Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion and the charming streets of the Castle District.

Autumn is also a great time to enjoy Hungarian food and wine, as the grape harvest season brings many wine and gastronomic events. If you have more time, a trip to Szentendre or the Danube Bend is a wonderful way to enjoy the colourful autumn landscape outside the city.

And from November, Budapest gradually starts getting into the Christmas spirit, with festive decorations, markets and cosy cafés adding a special atmosphere to the city.
